Inkcubeko Nendalo isiXhosa calendar, 2013
29th November 2012

Based on text from Voices from the Forest* Inkcubeko Nendalo has developed a desktop calendar for school teachers participating in our schools programme.

The calendar uses the isiXhosa names of the months of the year (iinyanga zonyaka) that all reflect aspects of nature. Ten of the months refer to flowering times of certain plants and the remaining two refer to stars. We hope that the calendar will encourage the use of the isiXhosa names of the months by teachers and pupils and at the same time promote an awareness of how nature is reflected in the isiXhosa language.

We are most grateful to the Donaldson Trust for funding the printing of the calendars. The calendar can be downloaded here.

Calendars serve as a link between humankind and the cosmos; it is little wonder that calendars have held a sacred status in many cultures.
